Cut to the two of us [Bella and me] at one of the places we used to always eat, Simple Simon's--a sandwich place. It's one of those really healthy organic natural places. The two of us used to laugh every time we mentioned it, because since it was across the street from CVC, all the people who worked there always come into our work. So when we walked in, a few faces turned to us,
"Ha, now you're coming to my work. Awesome!" A voice said.
Then later one of the other guys [this was when I was getting my boo a to-go box] asked me my name and shook my hand and we became friends, I guess.
Well, cut to us there--a present time [at the current moment] talking about the past.
"Remember how Tom always thought we were secretly dating!?" She said, her mouth full of food, but it was cute--because she was having such a good time.
"Yeah, that fucker was reading through my notebook!" I said getting ready to completely destroy the sprite we were sharing.
"Well, you shouldn't have left it out for him to find! Duh Ryan duh!" She said laughing.
"It's not like I did it on purpose, Bella! I thought I had grabbed it, even Betty thought I did too!" I said, the drink gone.
"He found it though. 'She poses like a model', what the hell, Ryan?" She said, not poking her potato salad.
"It was for 'Closing Shift'! It's a satire!" I screamed, she motioned for me to be quite.
"He never let up on that though, did he?" She asked.
"No, because if you remember--my car broke down right around that time, and you ended up getting a car before I got another one, so you started picking me up."
"Yeah, you thought once I got a car I'd just forget about you or something. Shows how much you know me! You were my best friend back then, and I'm really happy to have you back." She said.
"Thanks, I missed you too, Bells." She smiled and leaned over the table and gave me a soft kiss on the lips, the kind that make you want more, and like all great things; end too soon.
"Ha, I still can't believe you really thought we'd hangout less once I got a car." She said, poking at her food again. Playing with it, and mixing it around prior to consuming it.
"Well, it was always like we only hung out when I was giving you a ride home. We never just hung out." I said.
"I'm sorry." She said in an overly sarcastic tone.
"It was an assumption, and I was wrong." I said.
"We hung out WAY more when I got a car." She said.
"That's because you fell in love with me!" She then rolled her eyes at me. "Ha, but seriously, I guess you really were serious about being my best friend." I said.
"Well, duh Ryan. I wouldn't just say that stuff, that's not me." She started eating her potato salad, finally. "And come on, if anyone can stay your friend when you got all emo, and started acting all funny, they can stay your friend through anything!"
"Hey, I wasn't the only one having troubles during that time! Some of those feelings were mutual, I just don't hide them like you do."
"Whatever, I don't hide my emotions, Ryan." She shoveled more potato salad in her mouth.
"Just saying, things would have been different if we were."
"Well, duh!" She said. "Hey, remember how Manny got all jealous when Iban started working at the store!?" Her smile grew back.
"Yeah, I always felt that Betty and Iban made a better couple than her and Manny." I said playing with the empty cup.
"Why do you say that? Because they're both bigger?" She asked.
"No, I just don't think Iban would have kept her a secret. He would have treated her very well, and all she would have to do is like him back." I said.
"You can't just like someone back, Ryan."
"I know."
"Ugh, why do emotions have to be so weird?" She asked me.
"I wish I knew, you had me trippin there for a while."
"I know, it was really bad, huh?"
"You have no idea, Bella." I said, breathing out of my nose.
"Why didn't you just start dating other girls?" She asked.
"Because there were no other girls for that summer."
"So I was just a summer fling?"
"Those aren't always so bad, I mean we've both seen 'The Notebook'." I said with a smile.
"Ha, yeah they had a lot of sex in that movie." He chuckled.
"But no, clearly the two of us sitting here--still having those feelings makes it more than just a summer fling."
"You know something, Ryan. I think you're right." She smiled. There's something about when some people smile, you just can't help yourself, you have to smile back. The way their cheeks scrunch up, and their eyes squeeze together making them sparkle. I've always found the toothless smiles work better for this sort of thing. Although some people do have those huge grins that can brighten up a room.
"Hey, Ryan?" She asked, bringing me back to reality.
"Yes, Bella?" I asked.
"Let's go to the movies and then back to your place." She smiled again.
"I'm down with that, what do you wanna watch?" I asked.
"I don't care, that's why I'm going with you. You know what's good, or at least what I'll like and won't like."
"Yeah, I do kickass when it comes to movies."
"Well, I wouldn't have said it if it wasn't true." She said, her teeth breaking through her lips into a big smile.
"Hey, Bella?" She raised her eyebrows to me. "I'm glad to have you back, you haven't change a bit." She smiled and I leaned in to kiss her, she met me half way and then we got up to leave.
