Nightmare Stare [Chapter Twelve]

I was inside the grocery store before I knew it. I heard the bleeping sound of all the checkout lines. They blended with the murmur of voices until all I could hear sounded like a wave. It reminded me of white noise. I closed my eyes and pinched the section between my eyes, the sound lowered and so I proceeded towards the produce section.
I looked around for anyone wearing a uniform, I didn't see any. So I decided to get some fruit for Audrey, she did say she was hungry. I walked slowly, examining all of the fruit, each one. I didn't want to give my angel any imperfect fruit to be her first taste of food. All the apples and oranges were bruised and so I soon gave up and moved along to the vegetables. I looked first, at the carrots, but they were much too hairy, then I looked at the cucumbers, but they were much too small, and to my great surprise; the sweet peppers were just right!
I put one to my lips and slowly bite into it, the juices flowing around my mouth. I closed my eyes and chewed, they were the most delicious thing I'd ever eaten in a public place. But soon my fantasy was ended.
"Excuse me, sir." A girl's voice spoke to me. "You aren't supposed to eat them until, after you buy them." I opened my eyes to look at her, but was caught off guard by her blouse. It seemed to be ripping around the bust, I kept my eyes on it as a single button, the one in between her large breasts, flew and hit me on the forehead. I was so engrossed by the perfect spherical beauty of them that I didn't even notice until she said.
"Omygosh! I'm so sorry, sir!" One of her hands waving around erratically, not knowing how to aid me, while the other attempted to pull the shirt back to its originally constructed design. Her face was turning bright red and she bent over and turned away slightly, only slightly as if to not further offend me. I spoke, raising my hand, the one still holding the sweet pepper.
"Its quite alright, young lady." She looked at me, her eyes filling with tears. I'm assuming out of embarrassment. "I intend to buy the pepper and more." I turned now, unraveling a plastic bag. I picked up a few more peppers and spun them around quickly, closing the bag. I turned back around, with the button in between my thumbs and index finger. "Oh, miss." I could see her slowly walking away, head down. "I think you dropped this."
She looked back at me, still holding her shirt closed. The look in her eyes said 'I don't really need that' but she spoke.
"Oh, thank you." She said walking back towards me, the shirt forming around the breasts making them unbearable. Just as her fingers grasped the button, as soon as I could let my fingers release their hold, I snatched another bag and threw it over her head. In the blink of an eye I spun her head around, cracking several bones during the process. I could still see her eyes through the somewhat blurred bag, they had rolled into the back of her head as she spun around. Then she fell to the floor, her hand still tightly holding her shirt.
I bent down and took hold of her right pant leg. I walked out of the store dragging her dead body in my left hand and a bag of sweet peppers in the right. Just outside of the doors a child and his mother were heading my way.
"Hey, mommy! Look at that girl!" The boy called out. The mother looked around, not seeing me.
"Oh, stop with that whole imaginary friend thing, Jason!" She said taking a hold of his elbow and dragging him into the store. I continued to walk home, a little curious at that scene.
What was all of that?
How had the child seen her and not the mother?
Did he see me also?
The questions didn't stop one bit as I pulled the lifeless body through the city.
"Hey, man!" It was the same old black man from earlier. "She was there, didn't I tell you!?" The joy in his face was innocent.
"Yup, you sure did!" I agreed, pleased.
"Damn, man! Look at them titties! You gonna have some fun with those tonight, ain't yah?" He asked, now walking next to me. Then he looked at her again. "But man, she's she's dead! Why you gonna fuck with some dead titties? They just so cold and...well...DEAD!" I was repulsed.
"My actions have had no sexual purpose in them!" I blurted out, angrily. He step back slightly, putting his hands in the air.
"Alright, man! Alright, its cool. You just like killin' girls with big titties, we've all been there at least once in out life." He said, I could see he was reminiscing.
"I'm creating an angel." I corrected him.
"Oh...damn! It THAT what you're doing?" He was close again, smiling his big orange toothed smile, he breath stank of liquor. "I see you want only the best." He laughed.
"Exactly." I said.
"Yeah, man. Your channel wasn't coming in clear at first, but now I'm feelin' it." He paused. "Audrey, right?" I looked at him.
"What makes you say that?" I tried to lure the truth out.
"I was given a gift from the last...well, the you before you. The last God, man!" He said, we stopped at a crosswalk.
"What does that mean?" I asked.
"You mean the gift, or the whole 'God' thing?" He asked.
"Either one." I said, anger filling my voice.
"Well, I used to work for God-I mean, I mean, Howard. He was a great guy, but a little too passive and into the media." I didn't understand him. I shrugged. "Well, he gave me this gift to hear the others."
What others?
"The other Gods."
There are others?
"Not at the same time, but yeah, there're others." He said, we began to cross the street, the little red hand already blinking.
I still don't get it.
"You see, its like being president, only different, man." He said. "God doesn't choose to be God, he just is."
But I thought God was supposed to be invincible and forever, the alpha and the omega and all that?
"Well, he is. The power is, anyway. Its passed down, and he who is God controls the universe." We had crossed the street and were back on the sidewalk.
What about that damn tree?
"You didn't think this was the only universe out there, did you?" He asked, scratching his neck.
I didn't know what to think.
"Well, hey man!" He said walking into the street. "I gotta catch this bus!" I tried to stop him, I wanted to know more. He saw that in my eyes and said. "Don't worry, man. You'll need more parts, we'll talk soon." Then he ran across the street, and I walked home, alone.
