So, I just finished Chuck Palahniuk's book "Haunted". Now, as its not my favorite of his books, it is still a Chuck P. book, therefore, breath taking.
I understand why he wrote it the way he did, and I understand that the focal point of the novel was the series of short stories, tied together by the storyline. The storyline, although composed of characters I truly hated, had one of the best morals of all his books. Each other the short stories were fascinating, some more than others. My favorite being 'Civil Twilight'. The only good, I think, that came from the storyline was to reaffirm my unparalleled hatred for the human race. Its since been surfacing in my own story 'Nightmare Stare', which main character I also hate.
But the combination of reading that novel, filled with its self-centered humans, and writing my own story, has sent me to a very dark place. First of all, reading a Chuck P. book correctly, alters one's state of mind. Changes the way we view things. And secondly, creating a monster is a difficult thing to do. The German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche, once said,
"When you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."
In the same way that the role of The Joker killed Heath Ledger, I felt the affects of writing Victor Shelley slowly begin killing me. Its hard to go into the state of mind of a killer, myself not ever really being a violent person [although we do all have our breaking points, or people that push our buttons]. I'm planning on wrapping up 'Nightmare Stare' in the next week, with four chapters remaining, as a way of never again going to the place I'm in now; inside the head of a racist, gaybashing bigot, however redeeming his other qualities may be.
I've lost my train of thought, the same way Alice lost her way when she first fell down the rabbit hole. I pretty much have no idea what I'm talking about anymore.
Hahahahaha! I'm debating on either starting my dark comedy,'Confessions of a Teenage Zombie' story, or my romantic comedy,'Customer Service:The Slow Downfall of Happiness'.
So, all...nine of you reading out there...or maybe its just four...whichever story you'd like me to begin first, just leave its title in the comment box. Much obliged.
